There are two categories of visas - Nonimmigrant and Immigrant Visas.

If your stay is temporary, then you want to apply for a nonimmigrant visa. This type of visa allows you to enter the United States temporarily. If you are from one of the countries participating in the Visa Waiver Program, you may come to the United States without a visa as long as you meet certain requirements. If your reason to visit the United States is short term (business, tourism, medical treatment, studies, temporary employment, etc.) then you want to apply for a nonimmigrant visa.

If you intend to live and work permanently in the US, then you should consider an immigrant visa. These include sponsorship by US Citizen or Lawful Permanent Resident family members, sponsorship by a qualifying US employer, Immigrant Investors, persons fleeing persecution in their home countries, and Special Immigrants among others.

US Citizenship

There are many benefits to becoming a United States citizen; an honor that comes with many different rights – having more job opportunities, traveling freely, and voting rights. Persons may acquire US citizenship by birth, through US Citizen parents, or by meeting the eligibility requirements for naturalization. To find out more on how to become a US citizen click here.

Deportation and Removal

There are several reasons why an individual may be deported and removed from the United States. The most common include overstaying the period of time granted at the time of entry, entering without inspection, working without authorization, violating the terms of the non-immigrant visa, and criminal law violations. Once deported and removed, the individual may be ineligible for readmission to the United States for a period of ten (10) years, or may even be barred permanently depending upon the ground of removal. In many cases, especially in cases where the removable alien has close US Citizen or Permanent Resident family members, USCIS and Immigration Judges have discretion to waive the grounds of removability or inadmissibility.
